Battery passport data fields: every field with its access tier and requirement

All 97 fields of our field registry 0.5.0: model or battery level, access tier, requirement per battery category and link to Annex XIII.

In short

This page lists all 97 data fields of our field registry, version 0.5.0: whether a field describes the model or the individual battery, who may see it, and whether it is required, optional, required later or conditional for each battery category. It is based on Annex XIII and the Commission’s guidance; the Regulation and its acts prevail.

This page lists all 97 data fields that our field registry, version 0.5.0, defines for the EU battery passport. For each field you can see whether it describes the battery model or the individual battery, which access tier it belongs to, whether it is required, optional, required later or conditional for each battery category, and which provision of the Battery Regulation it rests on. The registry translates Annex XIII and the Commission’s guidance into individual items that can be checked one by one.

What is a data field?

A data field is a single piece of information in the passport with a fixed name, unit and validation rule, such as the rated capacity in Ah or the battery chemistry. Annex XIII describes the passport content in points that often bundle several items: point 1(h) asks for minimal, nominal and maximum voltage, point 1(o) for the internal resistance of the cell and the pack. The registry splits such points so that each item can be captured, evidenced and reviewed on its own. Every field has five attributes, shown here for the rated capacity:

How do model data differ from data on the individual battery?

Art. 77(2) separates information on the battery model from information specific to the individual battery, “including resulting from the use of that battery”. 70 fields of the registry describe the model: they apply to every unit with the same model identifier and are captured once. 27 fields describe the individual battery: serial number, date and place of manufacture, its status (‘original’, ‘repurposed’, ‘re-used’, ‘remanufactured’ or ‘waste’) and the condition data from operation.

Condition data only arise once the battery is used. According to the Commission, these fields may be empty when a new battery is first placed on the market, with two exceptions: the status and the values for performance and durability (Commission FAQ, question 8.6). At a minimum they must be updated when the battery’s status changes or such a change is being considered (question 8.3).

Who may see which field?

The access tier follows Annex XIII: information in point 1 is public, points 2 and 4 are accessible only to persons with a legitimate interest, and point 3 only to notified bodies, market surveillance authorities and the Commission, which also see point 2 (Art. 77(2)). In the registry 65 fields are public, 30 are reserved for a legitimate interest and 2 for the authorities. For fields outside Annex XIII we set the tier ourselves; the manufacturer’s identifier (GLN or EORI number), for example, is visible only to the authorities.

Who exactly has a legitimate interest is to be set by an implementing act under Art. 77(9), which existed only as a draft when we checked; the access tiers page explains what this means. The summary counts the fields per section and access tier and the required fields per category:

What do required, optional, required later and conditional mean?

The requirement applies per battery category. It describes what a field asks for a battery placed on the market or put into service from .

StatusMeaningExamples
requiredUnder Annex XIII and our reading of the guidance, the information is needed for this category when the passport obligation starts.Battery chemistry, rated capacity, EU declaration of conformity
optionalThe guidance calls the information optional or applicable only in certain cases, or the field goes beyond Annex XIII. Check whether your case is one of them.Warranty period, rated energy, product image
required laterThe obligation depends on a Commission act that is still missing; the field names the trigger.Carbon footprint per kWh, recycled content shares
conditionalRequired only if a condition is met: a particular value in another field or a property of your organisation.Hazardous substances, if the battery contains any; due diligence report from at a net turnover of EUR 40 million or more
Requirement status of the fields in field registry 0.5.0

A field that does not apply to a category is missing from that category’s list. The capacity threshold for exhaustion (Annex XIII, point 1(k)) and the SOCE value under Annex VII, Part A, exist only for electric vehicle batteries.

These public performance fields are required for stationary storage:

These fields are required later in every category. They depend on the acts on the carbon footprint (Art. 7) and recycled content (Art. 8), which were missing when we checked; the Commission confirms that this information is not yet required at the start (Commission FAQ, question 7.2). Which battery categories does the registry distinguish?

The registry has five categories. Four match terms of the Battery Regulation; one is a product category.

LMT batteryArt. 3(1), point 11Annex VII data in the battery management system (Art. 14)

Industrial battery without BMSNot a category of the RegulationModelled on the category of the same name in the Battery Pass consortium data model; in version 0.5.0 it has the same requirement rules as the industrial battery
Battery categories in field registry 0.5.0

The Commission’s guidance puts stationary and other industrial batteries in one column. Our split follows Art. 14, which requires up-to-date state of health and lifetime data in the battery management system only for stationary storage, LMT and electric vehicle batteries; that is our reading. These condition fields are therefore required for stationary storage:

Data fields from field registry 0.5.0

For other industrial batteries the same fields are mostly optional. Capacity fade, power fade and the increase in internal resistance stay required, because Annex XIII, point 4(a), asks for the Art. 10(1) values. For batteries without a BMS, the Commission’s reading is that status and performance values are due at placing on the market and on changes of status, and state of health information only where there is a BMS. For the usage data under point 4(d) the legal text does not provide the same exemption (Commission FAQ, question 8.5), so check which of these data you can record without a BMS.

How do the fields relate to Annex XIII and the Commission’s 71 data points?

79 of the 97 fields refer to a point of Annex XIII. The other 18 rest on other provisions, such as Annex VII or Art. 77(3), or go beyond the required information, such as the rated energy or a product image.

The Commission set out its reading in the guidance “Digital Batteries Passport – data points by category” (version 2.0 of ). It counts 71 data points and classifies each for electric vehicle, LMT and industrial batteries as mandatory, optional, applicable only in certain cases, or not to be filled in as of . The guidance is not binding, and our registry does not map it one to one:

  • We split data points. The information under Art. 74(1)(a) to (f) is one data point in the guidance and six fields in the registry. The internal resistance of cell and pack is one data point; the registry keeps separate fields.
  • We merge repetitions. The guidance leaves out the rated capacity under Annex XIII, point 1(g), as a repetition of the capacity from Annex VI; in the registry it is one field with both references.

How do you use the full list?

Filter the list by battery category, access tier or section. Without a category, the table shows the requirement for every category side by side; a dash means the field does not apply to that category.

In BatteryPass this registry decides which fields the editor shows for each model version and what is still missing before publication in testing. Terms such as access tiers or state of health are explained in the glossary, the legal framework in our battery passport guide.
