Stationary storage and BESS
A passport per storage battery, without maintaining every unit by hand
Stationary battery energy storage systems are industrial batteries under the Battery Regulation. From 18 February 2027 every such battery over 2 kWh that is placed on the market or put into service needs its own battery passport. BatteryPass keeps model data once per version and unit data per serial number.
What applies
What the Battery Regulation requires for stationary storage
In short, with the articles to read up on. The full picture with every source is in our article.
One passport per battery
From every industrial battery with a capacity of more than 2 kWh needs an electronic battery passport that is reachable through a QR code (Art. 77). It holds model data and information on the individual battery, including from its use.
Performance and durability
For rechargeable industrial batteries over 2 kWh a document with the performance and durability values of Annex IV is already required (Art. 10). These values also belong in the passport.
Data from the BMS
The battery management system of a stationary storage system has to hold up-to-date data for the state of health and expected lifetime under Annex VII (Art. 14).
Access tiers
Part of the information is public, part is meant only for persons with a legitimate interest and for authorities (Art. 77(2), Annex XIII).

With BatteryPass
How BatteryPass helps with storage batteries
Model version instead of unit-by-unit
Cell chemistry, performance data, declaration of conformity and end-of-life information are maintained once per model version. Units inherit them and carry only serial number, manufacturing date and condition.
Condition data in operation
Service partners report by link, your control room through the API. The passport is re-published at once or daily, and every version stays retrievable by date.
Second life
When a storage battery is repurposed or remanufactured, it gets a new passport that links to the original one.
Frequently asked questions about stationary storage
Does a home storage battery need a battery passport?
Yes, if it has a capacity of more than 2 kWh and is placed on the market or put into service from 18 February 2027. Exactly 2 kWh is not covered. Details in the article on stationary storage.
One passport per container or per module?
The passport belongs to every battery placed on the market. If you sell a container as one battery, you have one passport per container; modules or racks sold separately each need one. BatteryPass handles both; record your decision.
Where does the condition data come from?
From the battery management system, through service partners or your own control room. BatteryPass accepts it by link or through the API with a condition data key and re-publishes the passport at once or daily.
